Elder Eric and Sister Cathi Niven-Chicago Illinois

Hello everyone!  Cathi and I have been called as MLS (Member Leadership Support) missionaries, assigned to the Illinois Chicago Mission (ICM).  This is our second mission, the first being in the California Sacramento Mission (see our other mission blog).  Just like our last mission, we did not get where we had requested, but in all honesty, we really just want on opportunity to serve!

We received our call and had to wait for three months before heading out.  We were assigned senior mentors and went through four at home lessons.  I was informed that the missionary training center was overwhelmed and they were going to put us up in a hotel for the week.  I asked if we could do it from home and when they found out our last mission was within 5 years they said we didn't need to attend the MTC, we just needed to report to our mission by June 7th!

Our biggest concerns in going on this mission were Cathi's health (her’s is the miracle which I might included in the future) and the cost of the mission.  Knowing our concerns, we were hit with all types of monetary opposition from the very beginning.  In one month our main bearing in our washing machine went out, and unlike our last house, we have no room for me to under take such a repair project.  Our installed microwave went out.  As lastly, we lost a seal on our Saturn transmission.  The cost of which was greater than the car was worth. Knowing the waning durability of the Saturn, we decide to buy a different used car and turn in our Saturn on trade. That whole car fiasco is itself an interesting story which I will not relate here (we were blessed how it all worked out, another miracle). Never-the-less or should I say, and it came to pass that, we were able to purchase a car just like we needed and traded in our Saturn ($500!). Quite the blessing for us. Now we just needed to get our house

prepared for Ky and Mike and organized for us to depart. Then there was Ky and Mikes wedding. Cathi was stressing as she had to do the wedding dress! Two days after the wedding, Alice departed, then Katie departed and we headed east.

The drive was over 1400+ miles! We decided to schedule the drive to go about 500 miles per day. We also included a stop in Nauvoo! Seeing the temple was a real spiritual up-lift but our time did not allow us to take in a session. By dropping by Nauvoo, we had to take some little roads country roads and we had the opportunity to appreciate the fields of mostly corn! Beautiful!

We arrived at the mission home on schedule on the 7th around 8:00 pm. An office SR. Missionary, E. Brun, was there to greet us, give a bunch of unidentified keys and our apartment address. Thus began our second mission and thus we can see (scripture style) the Lord will bless his servants when they exercise faith and proceed forth!
